Bringing in food of animal origin

These pages aim to answer all of your questions on bringing in food of animal origin into the EU.

Can I bring meat or dairy products into the EU?

If you are arriving from outside the EU, you cannot bring with you any meat or dairy products without official veterinary documentation.

Such products are also not allowed to be sent in packages to individuals, unless specifically authorised and certified as being eligible for EU entry.

How can I bring in meat or dairy products into the EU?

You can bring them in if you follow the same process as for commercial imports. This means that you have to:

  1. obtain the necessary EU veterinary documentation from the official veterinary services of the country from which you are travelling, as long as this is an approved country, stating that the goods conform to the requirements for entry into the EU; and
  2. enter the EU through an authorised EU border inspection post for veterinary control, declare any such goods and present the appropriate documentation.

What about other products of animal origin?

If you want to bring small quantities of products of animal origin other than meat and dairy products, such as honey, eggs, and fish, into the EU for personal consumption, please check the rules with the competent authority in your country.

What about infant milk or food?

You are allowed to bring in limited quantities of powdered infant milk, infant food, and foods required for medical reasons provided that:

  1. such products do not require refrigeration before opening,
  2. they are packaged proprietary brand products for direct sale to the final consumer, and
  3. the packaging is unbroken unless in current use.

I’m arriving from the Andorra, Croatia, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino or Switzerland – what about me?

You may bring in meat or dairy products in small amounts for personal consumption.

What about travel within the EU?

The rules we present above relate to imports entering the EU. In general, within the EU you are allowed to carry any product of animal origin with you or send it through the post. For information on movement within the EU, please go to http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/animalproducts/personal_imports/index_en.htm

What happens if I break the rules?

  • All products that do not comply with the rules will be seized and destroyed when you arrive in the EU.
  • You will face delays on your journey.
  • If you do not declare such items, you may be fined or face criminal prosecution.
